Umed Bhawan Palace was built by Maharaja Umed Singh II who ruled over Kota in the early 19th century. Before deciding to make a new palace for himself and his family he used to reside in the medieval fort located in the city only. He entrusted Sir Swinton Jacob, an officer of the Royal Engineers in the British Army with the responsibility of constructing the palace.
